SEC filing
An SEC filing is a document submitted through the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's filing system under applicable securities laws and rules.
Plain-English definition: An SEC filing is a document submitted through the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's filing system under applicable securities laws and rules.[1]
How the term is used
Forms serve different purposes. Form 10-K is an annual report, Form 10-Q is quarterly, and Form 8-K reports specified current events. The form type and reporting period identify what the document is meant to disclose.[1]
What to check before relying on it
Read the form type, filer, accession number, filing date, reporting period, amendments, exhibits, and incorporated documents. A search result or company summary is not a substitute for the filing text.
Example
A press release may present selected adjusted results, while the attached 10-K or 10-Q supplies the financial statements, accounting notes, and formal period definitions.
